DIFFERENCE NO. 1: temperament |
POODLE: Although Poodles may be good dogs, they have a somewhat high level of energy and a tendency to become nervous. Being fearful is especially common in small size dogs, a trait which can lead to aggressive behaviour. They may also be reserved around people they are not familiar with. AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG: The Australian Cobberdog is a dog with a very docile and affectionate temperament. They enjoy being around family and need to feel loved. They are very sensitive and empathetic towards the emotions of their humans, but they are also very open to strangers. |
DIFFERENCE NO. 2: Anxiety |
POODLE: Poodles tend to be anxious dogs. This is reflected in their behaviours such as chewing and tearing up objects when left alone, anxious eating, or separation anxiety. Therefore, it is recommended that poodles receive firm training, since they can also be quite stubborn. AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG: The Australian Cobberdog is a fairly calm dog which, except on rare occasions, is not generally anxious about food or objects. These dogs form a very strong bond with their family and dislike being apart from them. However, due to their responsiveness, they are very easy to train and quickly learn what you ask of them. |
DIFFERENCE NO. 3: Coat |
POODLE: The Poodle has a curly coat which requires high maintenance. Frequent brushing is required as to avoid knots and monthly grooming is recommended. For this reason, many poodles are sheared to have short coats. AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG: The Australian Cobberdog has a hypoallergenic and wavy coat which is much easier to maintain than that of the Poodles. Its texture is softer and silkier, and our fingers should be able to glide through it with ease. |
DIFFERENCE NO. 4: Health |
POODLE: This breed is prone to visual problems such as cataracts, entropion, glaucoma and progressive retinal atrophy. Small poodles are also prone to digestive problems and hyperthyroidism. These two factors are particularly troublesome in this breed and should be monitored for early detection of problems. AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG: The main criteria for the breeding of the Australian Cobberdog is the selection of a temperament suited to both therapy and assistance and a hypoallergenic coat. Its development as a breed has been very well controlled from the beginning, meaning it has strong and healthy genetics. |
DIFFERENCE NO. 5: Barking |
POODLE: Poodle are among the dog breeds that have a tendency to bark, especially the smaller ones that are more sensitive. These little dogs often act as guard dogs by barking to warn of visitors. They love being the centre of attention and feel a sense of accomplishment from this, which may lead them to develop bad habits such as nuisance barking if they are being ignored or left alone. AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG: The Australian Cobberdog is definitely not a guard dog, as they tend to befriend anyone and everyone. They do not tend to bark nor use their bark to signal that someone is coming into the home. These dogs express themselves best by wagging their tail. |
DIFFERENCE NO. 6: Therapy dog |
POODLE: Given their characteristics, Poodles are not very suited to the tasks of pet therapy. However, it is possible to find some dogs that can perform this task if you select a dog with a confident and balanced temperament, as to avoid any aggressive reactions and attention seeking behaviour. AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG: The Australian Cobberdog was designed to be the ideal therapy and assistance dog. Due to its hypoallergenic nature, even people with allergies can benefit from this therapy dog, since it does not shed allergens into the environment. It is a dog that continually looks you in the eye and has a gentle, cautious and respectful attitude. These dogs are very friendly in appearance given their resemblance to cuddly toys. |
DIFFERENCE NO. 7: Responsible breeding |
POODLE: There are many people who breed Poodle with the sole aim of making a profit, with no concern for the dog's genetics or welfare. We advise that you please avoid such breeders. AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG: Here at our centre we have a breeding programme that guarantees that none of our dogs will be abandoned and we always take care of the welfare and genetics of all of our dogs. On top of that, we do everything legally, with contracts and transparent communication with our clients. |
